Carlos Carrasco won 18 games in 2017, cementing his status as one of the Cleveland Indians’ most valuable pitchers just a few years after being acquired in a Cliff Lee trade.
In 2019, he overcame a leukemia diagnosis during the season to return to the big leagues.
At the age of 16, scout Sal Agostinelli signed Carrasco for the Phillies. He made his professional debut in 2004, pitching for the GCL Phillies and finishing 5-4 with a 3.56 ERA.
He is the Gulf Coast League’s #14 prospect, according to Baseball America.
He struggled in 2005, with a 1-10 record with the Lakewood Blue Claws (allowing a.302 average), the Batavia Muckdogs (.392 opponent average, 8 home runs in 15 1/3 innings), and the GCL Phillies (0-0, 1.80).
In 2006, he burst out, winning the Paul Owens Award as the Phillies’ best pitcher and was voted Baseball America’s Minor League Player of the Year.
He pitched for Lakewood and finished 12-6 with a 2.26 ERA, allowing 103 hits in 159 1/3 innings and only six home runs after giving up eight in his brief appearance with Batavia in 2005.
Only Donald Veal, Philip Hughes, and Matt Garza had a lower allowed average in the affiliated minor leagues.
Carlos finished second in the South Atlantic League in ERA behind Matt Maloney and third in strikeouts behind teammates Maloney and Josh Outman as the BlueClaws won the league title for the first time.
With two complete games, Carrasco tied for the league lead with four other pitchers.
