Starling Marte is a Dominican professional baseball outfielder for the New York Mets of Major League Baseball (MLB). He previously played in MLB for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Arizona Diamondbacks, Miami Marlins, and Oakland Athletics.
On the Baseball America Top 100 Prospects list in February 2012, Marte was ranked number 73; on the Baseball Prospectus Top 101 Prospects list in February 2012, he was listed at number 56.
Marte was honored as an International League Mid-Season All-Star in 2012 while playing for the Indianapolis Indians. Marte was honored as the International League’s player of the week on July 2, 2012.
After being called up by the Pirates, Marte became the first player to come out of the Dominican Republic-based Latin American development center to play in the major leagues.
Against Astros pitcher Dallas Keuchel, his first pitch in the majors resulted in an RBI double. On his first at-bat, Marte became the first Pirates player since Don Leppert in 1961 to hit a home run.
He also became the first Pirate since Walter Mueller in 1922 to hit a home run on the first pitch of his major league career.
