Francisco Javier Morales is a Venezuelan professional baseball pitcher who currently pitches for the Philadelphia Phillies.
On July 2, 2016, Morales signed an international free agency contract with the Philadelphia Phillies organization. In ten appearances for the GCL Phillies, he was 3-2 with a 3.05 ERA.
Morales pitched for the Williamsport Crosscutters in Low-A the following year, posting a 4-5 record and 5.27 ERA in 56.1 innings of work.
He pitched for the Single-A Lakewood BlueClaws in 2019, going 1-8 with a 3.82 ERA in 96.2 innings pitched.
Because the minor league season was canceled due to the COVID-19 epidemic, Morales did not play in any games in 2020.
After the 2020 season, the Phillies added him to their 40-man roster. To begin the 2021 season, he was assigned to the Double-A Reading Fightin Phils.
On July 3, he and Kyle Dohy, Zach Warren, and Brian Marconi teamed to pitch a no-hitter against the Erie SeaWolves.
Morales, regarded as one of the best pitchers in the 2016-17 international signing class, signed with the Phillies for $720,000 in July 2016.
He progressed gradually, culminating in a strong full-season debut in 2019.
Following the suspension, he threw well in instructional league and won a spot on the 40-man roster, but a move to hitter-friendly Reading in 2021 proved disastrous.
Morales still has height and two plus pitches to rely on as he returns to the mound, and his fastball and slider can both miss batters. His fastball has reached 98 mph on occasion and is usually in the mid-90s.
His slider, which can reach 88 mph, is a real out pitch, and the combination of the two pitches helped him strike out 11.5 batters per nine innings in 2021, which was right on par with his career pace.
