One of the Tigers’ finest starting pitchers has received some bad news. Spencer Turnbull, a right-handed pitcher, will be out for the next 12 to 16 months as he recovers from his injury.
The Detroit Tigers announced on Tuesday that Turnbull would be having Tommy John surgery.
This may not come as a complete surprise to some, given he was already having problems when working in Lakeland on a rehab assignment.
Turnbull has already taken steps back due to arms concerns and persistent discomfort, and now he’ll have to undergo Tommy John surgery. Remember that Turnbull threw a no-hitter in May of this year.
Turnbull was facing the Seattle Mariners at the time, and he put together a fantastic night on the mound to record the no-hitter for the Tigers.
Turnbull is now on the Injured List, facing a hard road to rehabilitation, just two months later.
Turnbull’s 2021 season has come to an end, but he left behind some impressive numbers to kick things off. In 2021, Turnbull made nine starts with a 2.88 ERA and 0.98 WHIP. In his 50 innings of labor this season, he was brilliant.
After Turnbull recovers from surgery and rehabs, the hope should be that he can reclaim his previous form.
While some may believe Turnbull would return stronger than ever, this is not necessarily the case.
In any case, Turnbull’s need for Tommy John surgery is a major setback for the team. Younger players are breaking into the big levels, with Casey Mize and Tarik Skubal being stalwarts.
Turnbull appeared to have turned a new page in 2021, pitching with a calm and composed demeanor.
Hopefully, he will be able to make a quick recovery and return to the same level of competition on the mound.
