Spencer Enochs Torkelson (born August 26, 1999) is a Major League Baseball first baseman and third baseman for the Detroit Tigers (MLB).
The Tigers picked Torkelson first overall in the 2020 Major League Baseball draft. Torkelson played baseball, football, and basketball at Casa Grande High School in Petaluma, California.
During his high school baseball career, he hit.430 with 11 home runs and 99 RBI (RBIs). He committed to play collegiate baseball for the Arizona State Sun Devils at Arizona State University (ASU).
He was chosen to play in the All-Star Futures Game the following month. He batted.263 with 14 home runs and 36 RBIs in fifty games with Erie.
On August 15, he was promoted to Triple-A East’s Toledo Mud Hens, where he hit.238/.350/.481 with 11 home runs and 27 RBIs in 40 games. After finishing his Triple-A season, he joined the Arizona Fall League’s Salt River Rafters.
Torkelson was added to the Tigers’ Opening Day roster on April 2, 2022. On April 12, he got his first major league hit, a double against Boston Red Sox pitcher Rich Hill. On April 13, he hit his first major league home run off Red Sox pitcher Austin Davis.
