How Did The Tigers Get Derek Hill?
As part of the 2014 MLB Draft, Hill was selected by the Tigers in the first round (23rd overall). Signing bonuses of $2 million have been agreed upon by the Tigers in their pact with Hill, which was revealed June 11.
When he was younger, he had a scholarship offer from the University of Oregon. Following the 2019 season, the Tigers added Hill to their 40-man roster.
Following the season-ending injury to JaCoby Jones on September 2, 2020, Hill was called up by the Tigers to replace him.
On September 4, 2020, he made his MLB debut as a defensive substitute. In 15 games with the Tigers in 2020, he slugged.091 with no home runs or RBIs.
Hill was assigned to the AAA Toledo Mud Hens in May after beginning the season at the Tigers’ alternative training facility in Toledo.
Injuries to Victor Reyes necessitated Hill’s promotion to the majors on June 3. A three-run shot to left-center field off Cleveland Indians pitcher Zach Plesac gave Hill his major league debut on August 8.
A left ribcage contusion sustained in a collision with Akil Baddoo the night before landed Hill on the 10-day disabled list on August 11.
