The Milwaukee Brewers are in first place in the National League Central with a 17-11 record this season, but nothing went right during their 16-4 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday.
According to MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy, the Brewers not only lost by 12 runs, but pitcher Alec Bettinger also set an all-time record by allowing 11 earned runs in his first start.
In a June 2004 start against the Montreal Expos, Chicago White Sox pitcher Arnie Munoz also allowed 11 runs.
Over four innings, the Brewers right-hander surrendered 11 earned runs, 11 hits, and two walks.
Manager Craig Counsell left McCalvy in for so long, he explained, because the squad is struggling with a number of injuries and is in the middle of a stretch of 17 games in as many days.
Taking him out early would have put the bullpen under unnecessary strain in a game that was decided in the first two innings.
In the first inning, AJ Pollock hit a grand slam, and in the second, Matt Beaty hit a grand slam.
Bettinger became the only pitcher in the modern era to give up multiple grand slams in his debut, as he also gave up RBI singles to Beaty in the first and fourth innings.
Who Is Alec Bettinger Girlfriend?
Lilly Cady is Alec Bettinger’s girlfriend and future to be wife. Alec Bettinger proposed to Lilly a couple of weeks ago.
