The New England Patriots are a professional American football team headquartered in the Boston area that competes in the National Football League. They are a member club of the American Football Conference (AFC) East division and compete in the league’s regular season.
The team was founded in 1959 as the Boston Patriots and was a charter member of the American Football League (AFL) before becoming a member of the National Football League (NFL) in 1970 as a result of the AFL–NFL merger. Prior to moving to Foxborough in 1971, the Patriots played their home games in a number of different stadiums in the greater Boston area.
The team’s name was changed to the New England Patriots as part of the rebranding process. Foxboro Stadium served as the team’s home stadium until it was demolished in 2002 to make way for Gillette Stadium, which opened the following year. During the same season, the team began playing its home games at Gillette Stadium.
The Patriots are the franchise with the most Super Bowl victories (6, tied with the Pittsburgh Steelers), appearances (11), and defeats (11). (5, tied with the Denver Broncos). Prior to the twenty-first century, the franchise was generally unsuccessful but enjoyed a period of dominance from 2001 to 2019 under head coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady.
The New England Patriots have had former players Jerseys retired and also in their team hall of fame as a sign of appreciation due to these players accomplishments for the club. With Tom Brady’s retirement, his Jersey will be the new jersey number to be added to their retired list soon.
