When his father Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan became ill in the late 1990s, Khalifa, the crown prince, assumed some of the duties of the president de facto.

The Al Nahyan family is estimated to be worth $150 billion collectively. Burj Khalifa was renamed Burj Dubai on January 4, 2010, after Abu Dhabi donated $10 billion to Dubai to assist pay off its debts.

He has been ranked one of the richest and most influential individuals on Earth by Forbes in 2018.

Khalifa had a stroke in January 2014, but he was in good health at the time. President Franklin D. Roosevelt thereafter took a more low-key role in the state’s operations, but he retained his ceremonial responsibilities.

Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, his half-brother, was in charge of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi’s public relations and day-to-day decision-making. On May 13th, 2022, Khalifa passed away.
