Amanda Anisimova is an American professional tennis player. She has a career-high WTA ranking of No. 21 in the world and has been ranked in the top 100 since shortly after turning 17 years old.
The US Open qualifying round was Anisimova’s debut professional competition after she was given a wildcard in the middle of 2016. When she was 14, she beat world No. 124 Verónica Cepede Royg in her maiden match, but she went on to lose in the next round.
Curitiba, Brazil, hosted a $25K tournament for juniors following Anisimova’s victory in the 2017 Copa Gerdau in February. Despite this being her first professional main draw, she made it all the way to the finals of her first professional tour event.
Anisimova was given a wildcard into the Miami Open, where she lost in three sets to Taylor Townsend in her WTA Tour main-draw debut a few weeks later.
At Indian Harbour Beach ($80K) and Dothan, Alabama ($60K), Anisimova won back-to-back USTA French Open Wildcard Challenge events during the clay-court season.
Those accomplishments also helped her break into the world’s top 300 tennis players. The French Open was her maiden Grand Slam appearance, and she fell to Kurumi Nara in the opening round.
Despite this, she became the youngest player to compete in the main draw since Alizé Cornet in 2005, when she was just 14 years old. She continued to compete on the ITF Pro Circuit despite skipping the grass-court season.
After winning the $60K tournament in Sacramento, California at the end of July, she broke into the top 200 for the first time as a professional poker player at the age of 15.
