Andrew Velazquez is a Major League Baseball infielder for the Los Angeles Angels.
He has played for the Tampa Bay Rays, Cleveland Indians, Baltimore Orioles, and New York Yankees in the Major League Baseball (MLB). Velazquez made his Major League Baseball debut in 2018.
Velazquez comes from the Bronx, New York City’s neighborhood of Morris Park. Kenneth, his father, spent 20 years as a detective and undercover narcotics officer with the New York City Police Department.
Velazquez went to Fordham Preparatory School and was a member of the baseball team. He started out as a center fielder until his final year when he moved to shortstop.
Velazquez was selected All-Bronx Baseball Player of the Year by the New York Post during his final year. Velazquez was also a sprinter and high jumper for the Prep’s track and field team.
He obtained an athletic scholarship to play college baseball for the Virginia Tech Hokies at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech).
The Arizona Diamondbacks selected him in the seventh round of the 2012 Major League Baseball draft, with the 243rd overall pick.
He bypassed his Virginia Tech pledge and joined with the Diamondbacks, getting a $200,000 signing bonus.
In that same year, he made his professional debut with the Arizona League’s Rookie-level Diamondbacks and the Pioneer League’s Missoula Osprey.
