According to Jeff Jones of the Belleville News Democrat, the Cardinals will activate right-hander Angel Rondon before Saturday’s game against the Reds.
Rondon is already on the team’s 40-man roster, but the team has yet to make a decision on whether or not to activate him.
Rondon, an international signing from the Dominican Republic in 2016, will make his MLB debut at the age of 23.
In 371 innings in the minors, he has a 3.15 ERA and a 22.8% strikeout rate, but in 23 2/3 innings at Triple-A Memphis this season, he has a 5.32 ERA, which was his first taste of Triple-A play.
In his first two Triple-A starts, Rondon struggled, but he has since performed well enough that the Cardinals will give him a chance in the big leagues.
Given the Cardinals’ injury issues, it’s possible that the first look will be in the starting rotation. Kwang Hyun, Jack Flaherty, and Miles Mikolas are all out with injuries.
Kim was forced to leave the game early due to back discomfort on Friday night. Rondon can serve as a lengthy relief while the team waits to learn the status of Kim, and if Kim is placed on the IL, Rondon will be ready to enter the rotation.
MLB Pipeline considers Rondon’s curveball and fastball to be plus pitches, placing him as the 10th best prospect in the St. Louis farm system.
Despite the fact that he can reach 97 mph with his heater, Rondon’s “delivery generates natural deception, which often helps his fastball play beyond its velocity.”
