Ashleigh Buhai is a South African professional golfer. Now known as a major champion, Ashleigh Buhai is from South Africa. In a sudden-death playoff consisting of four holes, Buhai prevailed over In Gee Chun, a three-time winner of a major championship, to claim victory in the 2022 AIG Women’s Open.
With this victory, Buhai became the first woman to engrave her name on the trophy at the illustrious Muirfield links. Following Sally Little’s success at the 1980 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship and 1988 du Maurier Classic, Buhai became the second South African woman to win a women’s major championship with her victory.
Additionally, she joined the ranks of seven men who had won major titles, including Gary Player and Ernie Els, who both won at Muirfield, the first time in 1959 and the second time in 2002, respectively. The Rolex First-Time Winner trophy was awarded to Buhai, making him the 44th player to do so at a major competition.
On Sunday, Buhai never appeared to be as at ease on the Muirfield links as she had throughout the previous three rounds of the tournament. Buhai began the day with a five-stroke lead at -14.
Even though she had one birdie and two bogeys on the front nine, she maintained a three-stroke lead at the turn with a score of -13 because the competition around her was unable to capitalize on their opportunities.
