Baker Mayfield is an American football quarterback for the Carolina Panthers of the National Football League (NFL). Following a stint with Texas Tech, Mayfield played college football at Oklahoma, where he won the Heisman Trophy as a senior.
While attending Lake Travis High School in Austin, Mayfield served as the starting quarterback for the Cavaliers football team.
In just two seasons, he guided Lake Travis to the 2011 4A State Championship and a 25–2 record. There were six interceptions in his high school football career with 6,255 passing yards.
Michael Brewer, a former Lake Travis quarterback, had a back injury before the start of the 2013 season and was replaced as the starter by Mayfield.
Only-year walk-on Baker Mayfield is the first true freshman quarterback in the history of the FBS to start the season opener at quarterback. Mayfield threw for 413 yards and four touchdowns in his debut start against SMU.
Breaking the school record set by Billy Joe Tolliver, he also came just four short of the NCAA Division I FBS freshman record of 43 completions, held by Luke McCown, in the same game.
Mayfield is the first Texas Tech freshman quarterback to be selected Big 12 Conference Offensive Player of the Week since former Red Raider head coach Kliff Kingsbury in 1999.
It was a matchup of the last four Lake Travis quarterbacks: Garrett Gilbert, Michael Brewer, Collin Lagasse, and Mayfield.
Baker Mayfield Contract
Mayfield signed a four-year deal with the Browns after being drafted first overall in the 2018 NFL Draft. The four-year, $32.7 million deal that Baker Mayfield signed as part of the CBA was fixed in stone.
The entire contract, including a $21.8 million signing bonus, is completely guaranteed. There are roster bonuses for Mayfield in 2019, 2020, and 2021 as a result of his contract.
The Browns have the option to extend Mayfield’s rookie contract by one more year under the terms of the four-year deal he signed with the organization. In April of 2021, the Browns exercised their fifth-year option.
Mayfield will receive a salary of $18.9 million as a result of the option. In two of his first three seasons with the Cleveland Browns, Mayfield logged more than 75% of the team’s offensive snaps.

Baker Mayfield Trade
The Cleveland Browns and the Carolina Panthers reached an agreement on the trade of quarterback Baker Mayfield on Wednesday in exchange for a conditional first-round pick in 2024.
According to a source, the Panthers will pay $4.85 million for Mayfield’s contract while the Browns will pay $10.5 million, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported.
As part of a contract pending a physical, Mayfield agreed to convert his remaining $18.8 million salaries into incentives.
