Baker Reagan Mayfield is a National Football League quarterback for the Carolina Panthers. Mayfield went on to play college football at Oklahoma, where he won the Heisman Trophy as a senior. In the 2018 NFL Draft, he was selected first overall by the Cleveland Browns.
Mayfield set the rookie quarterback record for passing touchdowns in his NFL debut, leading Cleveland to their first win in 19 games, snapping a 635-day streak.
Mayfield struggled in his second season, but he rebounded in 2020, leading the Browns to their first playoff appearance since 2002 and their first victory in 1994.
Mayfield was born as the second of two sons to James and Gina Mayfield on April 14, 1995, in Austin, Texas. During his younger son’s senior year of high school, James, a private equity consultant, faced financial difficulties.
Because of their financial difficulties, the Mayfields were forced to sell their family home and move from rental homes to rental homes.
Mayfield grew up as an Oklahoma fan, attending many of the Sooners’ games as a child. His father lettered for the University of Houston for three years, but James did not.
Mayfield was the starting quarterback for Austin’s Lake Travis High School Cavaliers. He led Lake Travis to a 25-2 record and the 2011 4A State Championship in just two seasons.
He graduated from high school with 6,255 passing yards, 67 touchdowns, and eight interceptions.
