Bill Russell Biography

He served as captain of the United States men’s basketball team during the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, Australia. For five years, from 1956 to 1969, he played for the Boston Celtics and was named NBA Most Valuable Player five times.
For the first time, an African-American player and coach in any North American professional sport were acknowledged as superstars by the National Basketball Association (NBA).
In 1975, he was elected into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as a consequence of his playing career. Russell was named one of the NBA’s 50 greatest players in 1996 and will be a member of the 75th-anniversary team in 2021.
Russell was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011 by President Barack Obama in appreciation of his work on the bench and in the fight for civil rights.
