Bill Russell was an American professional basketball player who played as a center for the Boston Celtics of the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 1956 to 1969.
Russell, a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame who also won the Most Valuable Player award five times and was selected as an All-Star 12 times, was chosen as the best player in NBA history by basketball writers in 1980.
He is still the sport’s most prolific winner and is regarded as a model of selflessness due to the fact that he won games through defense and rebounding while allowing others to do the scoring.
That meant Wilt Chamberlain most of the time, as he was the only player of his period who could be considered a credible challenger for Bill Russell.
However, the only statistic that was important to Russell was the number of titles won: 11 to 2.
The person who was born in Louisiana also made an indelible impression as a Black athlete in a country and city where racial tensions are frequently a source of conflict.
He was present at the March on Washington in 1963, when Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech, and he defended Muhammad Ali when the boxer was criticized for refusing to be inducted into the military draft. Both of these events took place in 1963.
