William Laurence Bingham popularly known as Billy Bingham was a former footballer and manager for Northern Ireland and he passed away yesterday June 9 at the age of 90 according to his family.

Billy Bingham had an incomparable impact on Northern Irish football during the last 60 years. Bingham’s template for how his little country may achieve success – through group spirit, better fitness, and professionalism – was followed by one of his former players Michael O’Neill in guiding them to their first major tournament in 30 years, Euro 2016.

Bingham, who died at the age of 90, was the man who made a Catholic his captain and pushed for a new national stadium that was inclusive three decades before it was built.

Bingham rose through the ranks at Glentoran alongside Jimmy McIlroy, another player who would wear the green and white shirt, and he played part-time for the Glens while working as an electrical engineer in the shipyard until being signed by big-spending Sunderland in 1950.

Bingham led a number of clubs, some while still heading Northern Ireland, but it is for his second stint as manager of his country, which began in 1980, that he is best recognized.

According to sources, Bingham died peacefully in his sleep and his death is as a result of natural causes. His son, David has told the press his father had been diagnosed with dementia in 2006 and it was a miracle he had lived for 16 more years.

Among those who paid tributes to the late manager Billy Bingham is the Club Glentoran who tweeted “Everyone at Glentoran is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of the Billy Bingham”.

“The thoughts and prayers at the club go out to Billy’s family and friends at this time”.
