Brittney Yevette Griner is an American professional basketball player with the Women’s National Basketball Association’s Phoenix Mercury.
In Waco, Texas, she was a member of the Baylor Lady Bears basketball team. She is the only player in NCAA history to score 2,000 points and block 500 shots.
Rivals.com named Griner the nation’s No. 1 high school women’s basketball player in 2009. She was named to the All-American basketball team of the Phoenix Mercury in 2009.
She won the ESPY Award for Best Female Athlete in 2012. Griner earned a Nike sponsorship agreement in 2013.
In 2016, Griner was a member of the United States women’s Olympic team, which won gold in Rio.
Griner was named to the United States women’s national team in 2021, and she earned her second gold medal in the 2020 Olympics.
Brittney Griner was apprehended on February 17, 2022, at Sheremetyevo International Airport for reportedly carrying vape cartridges containing hashish oil into the airport.
She is currently being held in Russian detention facilities. A number of senior US officials have expressed worry that Russia may be using her as a bargaining chip in reaction to the Western sanctions placed against it following the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2014.
