Cal Quantrill is a Canadian professional baseball pitcher for the Cleveland Guardians of Major League Baseball (MLB). He previously played for the San Diego Padres.
During his tenure at Trinity College School in Port Hope, Ontario, Quantrill was a four-time varsity letterman in baseball, as well as an all-star in hockey and volleyball.
However, after the New York Yankees took him in the 26th round in 2013, he chose to attend Stanford instead of signing a contract.
He made 17 starts for Stanford as a freshman, including the Cardinal’s season opener, becoming the school’s first freshman starter since Mike Mussina in 1988.
He had a 7–5 record, a 2.68 ERA, and 98 strikeouts in 1102 1/3 innings of work as a starter for the Red Sox. A season-ending arm injury cut short Quantrill’s sophomore campaign with a 2–0 record and a 1.93 ERA in 1823 innings.
Tommy John surgery was performed to treat him, and he was sidelined until he recovered in time to play in 2016.
