Major League Baseball (MLB) team manager Anthony La Russa Jr. is an American professional baseball coach and former player (MLB). From 1963 until the present, he has had a long and varied career in Major League Baseball. He was the manager of the Cardinals in St. Louis and the Athletics in Oakland before that.
During the 1979 season, La Russa was named White Sox manager and led the team to an American League West division championship four years later. A few weeks after his dismissal as manager of the Oakland Athletics in the midst of the 1986 season, he was rehired by the team and guided the A’s to three straight American League titles and the 1989 World Series title.
Afterward, he became the Cardinals’ manager, leading the team to three NL championships and two World Series crowns. After winning the 2011 championship and 34 seasons as a big-league manager, La Russa announced his retirement. Three months later, he took a job as an assistant to Joe Torre, the executive vice president of MLB operations, who was also a former manager.
In 2014, he was named the team’s Chief Baseball Officer. The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim hired him as a senior advisor to baseball operations in November of 2019. Rick Renteria was fired as the manager of the Chicago White Sox in 2021, then he was re-hired.
