On December 13, 1993, Danielle Collins was born in St. Petersburg, Florida to parents Walter Collins and Cathy Collins. She had her high school education at Northeast High School and then continued at the University of Virginia.
Collins won the collegiate national championship while attending Virginia in 2014 and 2016, as well as the Honda Sports Award for best female tennis player in the country in 2016.
Collins made her WTA Tour debut in the main event of the Arthur Ashe Stadium’s 2014 US Open as a wildcard, forcing second seed Simona Halep into a third-set encounter in the first round. By the middle of 2016, she had fully embraced her career. While participating in the ITF Circuit, she won four singles titles.
Collins started the year by making it to the final round of the Australian Open qualifier before falling to Denisa Allertová in two sets. She did, however, win the WTA 125 match in Newport Beach, where she also reached a then-career-high ranking of 120, thanks to a wildcard.
Collins reached the semifinals twice after defeating Elise Mertens, the 19th seed, to become the third American woman to reach that round of the 2022 Australian Open. For the second year in a row, three Americans competed at this level of competition.
