The greater New York City area is home to the New York Jets, a professional American football team. The Jets are a member of the National Football League’s American Football Conference East division. The team was established in 1959 and given the name Titans of New York as a founding member of the American Football League (AFL).

In 1970, the AFL and NFL merged, and the team then joined the NFL. The group took part in activities at the Polo Grounds for the first time in 1960. After leaving Yankee Stadium in 1964, the team relocated to the Meadowlands Sports Complex in 1984. In 1963, new management chose the name that is used today.
