LeMahieu was taken in the 41st round of the 2007 amateur draft, but he chose to attend college rather than play with the Detroit Tigers.
During his time at Louisiana State University, he competed in two College World Series and was named to the All-Tournament Team in 2009.
In the 2009 amateur draft, Chicago Cubs scout Steve Riha drafted him in the second round and signed him. Two seasons later, he made it to the big leagues with the team.
During his first season with the Cubs in 2011, D.J. went 15 for 60 with two doubles. However, he was caught in a middle-infield logjam, with shortstop Starlin Castro and second basemen Darwin Barney and Blake DeWitt both making a name for themselves.
Consequently, the Cubs decided to get rid of hew and traded him to the Colorado Rockies on December 8th in exchange for Ian Stewart and Casey Weathers.
LeMahieu had a good shot to get into the Rockies’ starting lineup in 2012, now that incumbent second baseman Mark Ellis had signed with the Mets on a free-agent deal.
He didn’t get the job right away, spending time with the AAA Colorado Springs SkySox first, but his consistent hitting earned him more playing time as the season progressed.
A record-tying game against the Los Angeles Dodgers (8-4) on August 28 saw him tie an MLB record established by Harold Reynolds of the Seattle Mariners in 1986 with 12 assists, cementing his place in baseball history.
He had a .297 batting average in 81 games in 2012, and a.280 batting average in 109 games in 2013. When he appeared in 149 games for the Rockies in 2014, his batting average was.267 with five home runs and 42 RBIs.
The best element of his game was his glove, as he was awarded the Gold Glove as the National League’s best-fielding second baseman that year.
However, despite his defensive skills, his offensive in his first three seasons with the Colorado Rockies was lacking, with OPS+ scores of 88, 74, and 76 across the three years.
