In July 2017, the Padres signed Contreras out of Mexico for $50,000 and watched as he developed into one of their most consistent performers.
With a very strong performance at the team’s instructional camp, Contreras’ status continued to rise after posting a 3.61 ERA in 25 appearances (23 starts) at Class A Fort Wayne in 2019.
That is until he had Tommy John surgery after blowing out his right arm during his final game.

Although Contreras hasn’t thrown for the Padres in two seasons, their addition of him to the 40-man roster during the summer shows they still have high expectations for the right-hander.
Due to his bulkier, smaller body, Contreras doesn’t have a lot of physical projection, but since he started playing professionally, his skills have progressively improved.
He commands his fastball, which sits in the mid-90s for a pitcher his age, with ease. He sets up one of the best curveballs in San Diego’s system with that heater, and he also has a strong changeup to deal with left-handed hitters.
