Belgian tennis player Elise Mertens is ranked number one in the world in doubles. She made her WTA Tour debut in the main draw of the doubles event at the 2015 Copa Colsanitas with Nastja Kolar. Her first WTA doubles title came in 2016 when she partnered up with An-Sophie Mesta to win the Auckland Open.
In January 2017, Mertens won the Hobart International after defeating No. 3 seed Monica Niculescu. Mertens became the first female to accomplish it when she won back-to-back championships in Hobart to begin the 2018 season. She defeated Mihaela Buzărnescu in the championship match to successfully defend her title from the previous year.
Together with Demi Schuurs, she won the doubles title. At the 2022 Australian Open, she and partner Veronika Kudermetova, who was seeded third in doubles, made it as far as the quarterfinals before losing to the eventual champions Barbora Krejková and Katerina Siniaková.
She and Kudermetova defeated Ostapenko and Lyudmyla Kichenok in Dubai to claim their sixteenth doubles title. She advanced to the fourth round of the 2022 French Open in singles, where she was beaten by Coco Gauff in straight sets, for the second time in this Major, and to the third round of doubles with Kudermetova.
