Eliseo Mendoza Berrueto, the former governor of Coahuila, died Wednesday at the age of 91 in Saltillo from heart problems.
Mendoza Berrueto had an active political career locally until 2015 when his term as chairman of the local assembly expired. He was undersecretary of Commerce under Gustavo Daz Ordaz, then of Education, and later of Energy with Luis Echeverra.
Senator during López Portillo’s six-year tenure, he presided over the Chamber of Deputies from 1985 and 1987, the latter year in which he was nominated for governor (1987-1993).
Mendoza Berrueto, who was born on April 13, 1931, served as Governor of Coahuila from 1987 to 1993, succeeding Rogelio Montemayor.
Governor Miguel Ángel Riquelme regretted the loss of the PRI lawmaker on Twitter, and in the case of his death, he postponed an event set for 10:00 a.m. by one hour.
“I am saddened by the death of a great Coahuilense, friend, and former Governor. My condolences to Don Eliseo Mendoza Berrueto’s family and friends. Rest in peace, my friend.”
According to local media citing family sources, the former governor was admitted to the hospital for surgery a few days ago, following which he got an infection that deteriorated.
Unfortunately, there is no information about Eliseo Mendoza Berrueto’s children, he was a very private man, hence he kept his personal life private.
