Elizabeth Anne Holmes is a former American entrepreneur in the field of biotechnology who was found guilty of engaging in fraudulent activity.
Holmes dropped out from Stanford University in 2003 and went on to start and serve as CEO of Theranos, a now-defunct health technology firm whose valuation skyrocketed on the back of claims that it had revolutionized blood testing by creating technologies that could use remarkably little volumes of blood, such as from a fingerprick.
After valuing her company at $9 billion, Forbes declared Holmes the youngest and richest self-made female billionaire in America in 2015.
Forbes lowered its estimate of Holmes’s net worth to zero the following year, as new information regarding the possibility of fraud regarding Theranos’s claims began to surface. Fortune named her in its feature story on “The World’s 19 Most Disappointing Leaders.”
