Estelle Nussbaum was born on April 4, 1928, in Manhattan, New York, the younger of two daughters of Polish Jewish immigrants Isaac (“Ira”) and Anna Nussbaum, who had a candy business.
When she was seven years old, she relocated to Tarentum, Pennsylvania, to be closer to her aunt and uncle, who had invited her father to work in their candy shop. Tarentum High School is where she graduated.

Estelle Harris and her husband, Sy Harris, were the parents of three children.
Estelle and Sy were fortunate enough to have three children. In addition to their daughter Taryn, they have two sons, Eric (1957) and Glen (1961)
A social worker, Glen is a music promoter who also happens to be his mother’s unofficial manager, and Taryn is a former Nassau County police officer who is now on disability leave. Harris is also the grandfather of three grandkids.
Harris resumed performing once her children entered school, first in amateur performances, then in dinner theater and commercials.
