George Fant, a former offensive tackle for the Seattle Seahawks, was reported to have signed a three-year, $30 million contract with the New York Jets.
After losing Jack Conklin, Graham Glasgow, and others on the first day of NFL free agency, GM Joe Douglas made what appeared to be a desperate move by signing free agent Corey Graham.
Douglas’s actions in recruiting Fant are not immediately obvious from this agreement.
To be exact, SNY’s Ralph Vacchiano verified that Fant’s deal is worth $27.3 million over the course of those three years. Moreover, just $9.25 million of the total guaranteed $13.7 million is actually a sure thing.
On the fifth league day in 2021, the remaining $4.45 million will become completely guaranteed. The total amount of the contract, including bonuses, is $30 million.
According to Manish Mehta of the Daily News, Fant is joining the Jets on a one-year contract worth $9.25 million.
Considered a work in progress at tackle, that’s not awful at all. Even yet, the No. 11 overall choice in the NFL Draft is still available, so the Jets can select another lineman for their team.
Douglas is also making moves in the guard market, having recently re-signed Alex Lewis and having been linked to Greg Van Roten. Vacchiano has been in contact with Van Roten, who has started for Carolina the last two years to begin the season.
According to Michael Nania, last season Fant was ranked 75th out of 84 qualified tackles in pass blocking. That places him below both Brandon Shell and Chuma Edoga, two players the Jets were looking to upgrade from this offseason.
