A former socialite and convicted sex offender from the United Kingdom, Ghislaine Maxwell’s full name is Ghislaine Noelle Marion Maxwell. She received an annual income of £80,000 after her father’s death in 1991 thanks to a trust fund he had set up in Liechtenstein. She had relocated to an Iranian friend’s apartment with a view of Central Park by 1992. Maxwell was said to be mingling with celebrities at the time while working at a real estate firm on Madison Avenue.
As a socialite in New York City, she gained widespread notoriety very rapidly. She started a nonprofit organization in 2012 to safeguard the oceans. Prosecutors accused Epstein of engaging in sex trafficking in July 2019, and that same month, the organization declared its closure.
Due to her relationship with Epstein, she was detained on July 2, 2020, and the federal authorities of the United States accused her with enticing juveniles and trafficking in underage girls. She was refused bail because she posed a flight risk, and the judge was concerned about her “totally opaque” financial situation, her aptitude for living covertly, and the fact that France does not extradite its residents.
She was found guilty on five of the six counts in December 2021, including one for trafficking a minor’s sex. Although the prosecution sought a sentence of at least 30 years, Maxwell was given a 20-year prison term on June 28, 2022.
