Gwyneth Paltrow’s acting debut was in High (1989), a television film directed by her father, and Paltrow made her professional stage debut at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in Massachusetts in 1990, after spending several summers watching her mother play there.
Following that, she made her cinematic debut in John Travolta’s musical romance Shout (1991), and her godfather Steven Spielberg cast her as the young Wendy Darling in the commercially successful adventure picture Hook (1991).
Paltrow starred as Emma in the 1996 period film adaptation Emma, which was based on Jane Austen’s 1815 novel of the same name.
Following a recommendation from his agency and after seeing Paltrow’s performance in Flesh and Bone, director Douglas McGrath chose to call her in for an audition for the part of Emma Woodhouse.
Paltrow’s career took a turn for the better in 2008 when she was cast as Pepper Potts, Tony Stark’s personal assistant, best friend, and burgeoning love interest in Iron Man.
Paltrow, who was initially apprehensive to appear in a big-budget film, requested that Marvel provide her any comics that were pertinent to her knowledge of the character, whom she believed to be incredibly intellectual, levelheaded, and grounded.
“I enjoy the fact that there’s a sexiness that isn’t apparent,” she remarked. Director Jon Favreau intended the connection between Potts and Stark to be reminiscent of a 1940s screwball comedy, which Paltrow thought was “innocent and sexual.”
Iron Man was well acclaimed by critics, and it became Paltrow’s highest-grossing film until The Avengers, with a worldwide gross of $585 million (2012)
