Hansjorg Wyss is a Swiss billionaire businessman and donor to politically liberal and environmental causes in the United States. A medical device producer, he founded Synthes Holding AG and served as the company’s president and chairman.
He has amassed a fortune through his Wyss Foundation, which stands at more than $2 billion in value. According to Forbes, Wyss had a net worth of $5.1 billion as of March 2022.
He has already donated hundreds of millions of dollars to environmental initiatives, but he has recently boosted his contributions to organizations that advocate for progressive causes.
In 1935, Wyss was born in the Swiss city of Bern. A mechanical calculator salesman and a housewife were the parents of his son. He grew up with his two sisters in a little flat.
A master’s degree in civil and structural engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich was Wyss’s first step toward obtaining an MBA from Harvard Business School.
Afterward, he worked as a production engineer and project manager for Chrysler in Pakistan, Turkey, and the Philippines, among other countries.
Wyss also had a job in the Brussels steel sector. Wyss had a side business selling planes while he was employed in that field. He met a surgeon who was a co-founder of the Swiss medical equipment business Synthes through a single sale.
Wyss spent the next two years immersing himself in the medical device market as a result of that encounter. In 1977, he established Synthes USA and rose to the position of president.
