A nine-year $30 million deal with the Chicago Cubs was allegedly struck on June 11, 2012. General manager Jed Hoyer of the Cubs disputed that a deal had been reached with Soler prior to his declaration as a free agent.

A batting average of 282 came from 32 games, which included eight home runs and 29 RBIs.

Soler became the 117th player in MLB history to hit a home run in his first major league at-bat on August 27 against Cincinnati Reds pitcher Mat Latos.
