In his four years at Michigan State, Sokol played in 52 games, yet he went undrafted in this year’s NFL Draft despite his impressive resume. However, he quickly found a team as a rookie free agent, signing a three-year agreement with the Los Angeles Chargers just after the seventh round concluded. Sokol has been on four different teams in as many years since he entered the league, and he still hasn’t settled down.
Sokol began his professional career in Los Angeles, but he ended up on the practice squad for the Jacksonville Jaguars. He inked a futures contract with the Detroit Lions as a backup player after the season ended.
He remained a member of the squad until October, when he was released and subsequently signed with the Chargers. After stops in Jacksonville and Detroit, the Patriots picked Sokol up off waivers in May. His total number of regular season games played amounts to two, both of which came in 2020 as a member of the Lions.
How Good Is Matt Sokol?
Sokol spent the offseason and preseason with the Chargers after finishing the 2020 season on the active roster. He participated in all three preseason games but only played 35 of 178 offensive snaps (19.7%) and 16 of 68 special teams snaps (23.5%). The former UDFA caught only three passes for a total of 30 yards due to his lack of opportunities. It was not a shock when he was cut on roster day.
Sokol is a classic tight end since he can play multiple roles and doesn’t have any glaring weaknesses. He has a wealth of experience as both a pass catcher and a blocker, making him a well-rounded choice for a rotating position depending on the package. As a result, Sokol is expected to serve as New England’s secondary tight end behind starter Hunter Henry.
