Jackson was nominated by President Obama on September 20th, 2012 to fill the vacancy left by retiring District Court Judge Henry H. Kennedy Jr.

In a voice vote, the Senate confirmed her on March 22, 2013. As of March 26, 2013, she had been appointed by Chief Justice Breyer and had been sworn in by him in May of the same year.
When she served as a judge on the District Court, Jackson wrote a number of judgments against the Trump administration’s positions.
She stated that presidents are not monarchs in the ruling requiring Trump’s former White House counsel Donald McGhn to hand over documents to a legislative subcommittee.
Many objections to executive agency acts were handled by Jackson, including some that involved issues of administrative law. She also ruled on a number of high-profile cases, many of which received attention from the media.
