The Bronx is home to the New York Yankees, a professional baseball team from the United States. The Yankees, one of the most well-known and prosperous teams in all of the sports, have taken home a record 27 World Series championships and 40 American League (AL) pennants.
The team debuted in 1901 in Baltimore, Maryland, and played two seasons in the American League as the Orioles.
Frank Farrell and Bill Devery purchased the faltering Baltimore team in 1903 and moved it to New York, first to Hilltop Park (1903–12), one of Manhattan’s highest points, hence the name New York Highlanders.
More than any other team, the New York Yankees have participated in 40 World Series and been able to have won 27 of them.
