A shooting incident occurred at Highland Park on Monday, July 4 2022. The shooter, currently unknown opened fire from a rooftop on paradegoers in Highland Park.
At a news conference held hours after the shooting, Christopher Covelli of the Lake County sheriff’s office and the Lake County serious crimes task force claimed that authorities were still looking for the shooter as of late Monday afternoon and “the perpetrator still has not been captured so far.”
Covelli claimed that the shooter fired from a rooftop and that he was armed with “a high-powered rifle” that had been located. He was incredibly covert and challenging to spot.
He described the crime as “extremely purposeful, quite random.” According to Covelli, it appeared that the shooter had climbed to the rooftop using an “unsecured” ladder.
According to Highland Park police Cmdr. Chris O’Neill, the area of downtown Highland Park that is bordered by Green Bay Road, Laurel Avenue, St. John’s Avenue, and Elm Place is where investigators were concentrating their manhunt. It was no longer necessary to request that anyone outside of that region take cover.
According to Covelli, the suspect is being sought after using canines and drones, and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives is looking into the rifle’s ownership history.
