When Don Shula steered Miami to its first NFL perfect season in 1972, the Dolphins beat the Washington Redskins 14-7 in Super Bowl VII to complete a 17-0 season. The 2007 Patriots stayed undefeated until they lost to the New York Giants in the Super Bowl; no other team has since achieved that accomplishment.
Despite the loss of quarterback Griese to injury in the fifth game of the season, Shula was able to maintain a winning record. During Shula’s time in Baltimore, Earl Morrall, 38, served as the backup to Unitas. When Griese returned for the playoffs, he led the club to the Super Bowl victory.
During that season, Shula became the first head coach in the United States to win 100 games in his first decade as a head coach.
After an 18-game winning streak, Shula’s 1973 team dropped its second game of the season to the Oakland Raiders. This is the third-longest streak in the history of the league.
