He went to Altavista High School in Altavista, Virginia and studied there. In high school, he was a safety and a quarterback. He has decided to attend the University of Virginia and play football there as a freshman. As a high school student, Thornhill also participated in the basketball team.
Thornhill was a regular performer at the University of Virginia from 2015 through 2018. Thornhill earned his Anthropology degree from the University of Virginia. He recorded 208 tackles, 13 interceptions, and 1.5 sacks throughout the course of his career.
Thornhill was taken by the Kansas City Chiefs with the 63rd overall choice in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft.

Thornhill signed a four-year, $4.64 million contract with the Kansas City Chiefs on May 14, 2019, which included $1.79 million in guaranteed money as well as a $1.37 million signing bonus. Thornhill and Daniel Sorensen, the team’s longtime starting free safety, battled it out throughout camp.
After Eric Berry was cut by the Chiefs and Eric Murray left in free agency, the position was left empty. To begin the regular season, head coach Andy Reid named Thornhill the team’s backup free safety to Daniel Sorensen.
