Thornhill was a regular performer at the University of Virginia from 2015 through 2018. Thornhill earned his Anthropology degree from the University of Virginia. He recorded 208 tackles, 13 interceptions, and 1.5 sacks throughout the course of his career.

After Eric Berry was cut by the Chiefs and Eric Murray left in free agency, the position was left empty. To begin the regular season, head coach Andy Reid named Thornhill the team’s backup free safety to Daniel Sorensen.
