Justice Sonia Sotomayor is an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. She was nominated by President Barack Obama on May 26, 2009.
In 1997, President Clinton nominated her to the Second Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals. By the time she was finally approved in 1998, her candidacy had been stalled by the Republican majority in the US Senate.
Sotomayor presided over more than 3,000 appeals and wrote more than 380 opinions while serving on the Second Circuit Court of Appeals. Previously, Sotomayor served as a faculty member at the New York University Law School and Columbia Law School.
Following the retirement of Justice David Souter, President Barack Obama nominated Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court in May 2009.
In August 2009, the Senate voted 68–31 to approve her candidacy. Sotomayor has supported the informal liberal bloc of justices whenever they have divided along ideological lines throughout her time on the Court.
