Nate Herbig, a veteran of the Eagles’ offensive line, was cut officially on Wednesday, over 48 hours after the news of his impending release first surfaced.
It’s possible that Philadelphia’s delay was a desperate attempt to get something in return for a player who has done well as an injury replacement on the inside of the offensive line over the past two seasons.
Herbig was the Eagles’ starting right guard for 12 games and 79 percent of their offensive snaps in 2020, the year he was ranked 13th best guard in the NFL by Pro Football Focus.
Herbig started five games and played in 43% of the offensive snaps despite being asked to play all three interior line spots at various points last season, and he did it effectively, earning a PFF grade of No. 31 overall.
With the addition of Cam Jurgens, a center by trade and a second-round draft pick, the Eagles now boast remarkable depth along their offensive line’s interior.
The Eagles no longer wanted to pay the $2.433 million Herbig was being paid as a restricted free agent, so they cut ties with the 23-year-old.
While this was going on, Herbig’s agent Ken Sarnoff was cognizant of the statistical challenges his client would face.
Herbig, who was signed by Philadelphia as an undrafted free agent out of Stanford in 2019, appeared in 34 games for the Eagles, 17 of which he started.
Is Nate Herbig still in the NFL?
Nate Herbig of the New York Jets is still in the NFL. He has been in the NFL since 2019 after he signed as an undrafted free agent with Philadelphia Eagles. On May 5, 2022, Herbig was signed up by the New York Jets after being claimed off waivers by the Eagles.
