His academic education and football career were both completed at Fort Hays State University, where he competed for the Fort Hays State Tigers. Shepherd was taken by the New York Jets with the 72nd overall pick in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft.
He was offered a four-year, $3.87 million contract by the New York Jets on May 14, 2018, which also included a $987,724 signing bonus. On September 10, 2019, he received a six-game ban for breaking the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs. Shepherd battled a herniated disc in his back, a shoulder ailment, and underwent a sports hernia operation in the off-season, it was revealed.
Shepherd eventually received a punishment after admitting to using PEDs to hasten his recuperation. On October 29, 2019, he returned from suspension, and on November 1 of that same year, he was activated. He agreed to a one-year contract extension with the Jets in March 2022.
