Mr. Rushdie was set to speak at the Chautauqua Institution in Western New York on Friday morning about the United States as a safe haven for exiled writers, but an attacker rushed the stage instead.

According to the police and eyewitnesses, the attacker stabbed Mr. Rushdie, 75, multiple times in the stomach and neck before being restrained by others.

Salman Rushdie is alive but in a critical condition as of now.

Rushdie was on a ventilator and unable to talk, according to an update from Rushdie’s agent, Andrew Wylie, issued just before 7 p.m. on Friday.

He declared, “The news is not good.” The nerves in Salman’s arm were cut, his liver was pierced, and it is possible that he may lose one of his eyes.
