Al Jazeera news reporter and anchor Shireen Abu Akleh has been shot and killed in the early mornings of today at the Northern Occupied West Bank. The 51-year-old new reporter was on a mission to cover the stories about the Israeli and Palestinian raids which have been occurring lately when she was shot in the head by the supposedly Israeli army.
Akleh was rushed to the hospital after the shootings where she, unfortunately, passed away at age 51. She was taken to the Al Najah Medicine University to be taken for an autopsy. Another colleague Ali Al-Samoudi from Al Jazeera had also been shot in the back and is currently in a stable condition.
Speaking through tears, Nida Ibrahim who was a colleague and friend of Akleh said “Our loss is so huge. she was kind, dedicated, and devoted. She knew the story through and through and she understood the nuances. She brought a wealth of information to her reporting.”
It was revealed by Ibrahim that Akleh had been studying Hebrew in order to understand Israeli media narratives better and had recently completed a diploma in digital media.
Akleh was a household name as the woman had boldly been able to make coverages of the recent Palestinian-Israeli conflicts. She had dual citizenship of the United States and a native of Jerusalem and is currently survived by her brother, Tony Abu Akleh.
