He attended Boston College for his undergraduate studies and his football career, playing five seasons for the Eagles while redshirting his first. In the seventh round of the 2019 NFL Draft, Sweeney was chosen by the Buffalo Bills. On May 9, 2019, the team offered him a rookie contract. The organization activated him back to the PUP list on November 11 after moving him to the reserve/COVID-19 list on October 24, 2020. Sweeney should be ready for the 2021 season, said Bills general manager Brandon Beane in April 2021.
When it was revealed that it had once been doubtful whether he’d be able to play again, it was in June 2021 that he made his comeback. In a defeat to the Tennessee Titans in October 2021, he caught his first touchdown of the season.
