To acquire James Shields and Wade Davis from the Rays (along with Mike Montgomery, Patrick Leonard, and Wil Myers), the Royals dealt Odorizzi to Tampa Bay on December 9th, 2012.
On March 12, he was sent to the Triple-A Durham Bulls. It was in early May when the Bulls and Pawtucket Red Sox faced each other, and he pitched a joint no-hitter.
On May 20, the Rays selected his contract and sent him to Toronto to face the Blue Jays. On May 29, he was returned to the Bulls.
When he was called up to face the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on August 29, he was immediately optioned back to Durham. On September 20, he was recalled.
He pitched for the Durham Bulls in the minors for most of the 2013 season, going 9–6 with a 3.33 ERA in 22 starts. He was called up at the close of last year and appeared in seven games, starting four, with a 3.94 ERA.
Odorizzi spent most of the 2014 season as the team’s No. 4 starter. In 33 starts, he was 11–13 with a 4.13 ERA, pitching 168 innings and striking out 174 batters. In the American League’s Rookie of the Year voting, he finished 8th.
The only reason Odorizzi had a 9-9 record with an ERA of 3.25 and a FIP of 3.16 in 169.1 innings of work in 2015 was that he only made 28 starts that season.
He had the highest percentage of changeups among all major league pitchers (30.0 percent ).
In 33 games and 187.2 innings pitched in 2016, Odorizzi was 10-6 with a 3.69 ERA. In 2016, he has the most no-decisions out of all starting pitchers in MLB.
