James Franco is an American actor, filmmaker, and writer. For his role in 127 Hours (2010), he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor.
Franco spent a lot of time talking to two of Dean’s friends in order to better understand him. Other sources of information included reading Dean’s books and watching his movies.
His family and friends as well as his then-girlfriend were cut off from Franco when he was filming James Dean to get into character.
Franco was already a fan of Dean, but he feared he’d become a one-trick pony if he portrayed him too realistically.
“Franco could have walked through the job and done a passable Dean, but instead gets inside the skin of this insecure, rootless young guy,” noted Ken Tucker of Entertainment Weekly.
He was nominated for a Golden Globe, an Emmy, and a Screen Actors Guild Award in addition to his Golden Globe win (SAG).
Franco gained worldwide recognition and attention as Harry Osborn, the son of the villainous Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe) and the best friend of Spider-Man in the 2002 superhero picture Spider-Man (Tobey Maguire).
First, Franco was considered to play Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the movie.
