The Angels have made extensive use of pitchers who are making their Major League debuts this season in preparation for the season of 2022.
On Friday, lefty Jhonathan Diaz became the Angels’ 11th rookie pitcher to make his MLB debut. Diaz, on the other hand, had a rough outing, going just 1 2/3 innings in the A’s 5-4 series opener loss at Angel Stadium.
“Despite his positive impressions, Angels manager Joe Maddon was unimpressed with the rookie’s outing. If you’re going to get off to a bad start, you might as well get it right away.
He was unable to consistently enter the zone. However, they didn’t just go out there and beat him up. The sliders and the changeup were both excellent. On the basis of walks, our team just lost the game.”
As a result of two-way star Shohei Ohtani’s projected start being delayed two days to Sunday due to arm pain, Diaz was selected to start for Triple-A Salt Lake versus Oakland.
