Jhonathan Diaz of the Salt Lake Bees was selected Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week today. Diaz joins Cesar Valdez as a Salt Lake pitcher who has been named Pitcher of the Week in back-to-back weeks.
On April 28, Diaz pitched eight innings for Round Rock, allowing just one hit, no walks, and no runs while striking out seven batters.
Diaz has a 2-0 record and a 1.96 ERA this season, striking out 18 batters in 23 innings of work. On days that Diaz starts, the Bees are a perfect 4-0 this season.
The Bees pitching staff, led by Diaz, had a 3.28 ERA in April, leading the PCL in the fewest runs allowed.
The 3.28 ERA is the lowest for Bees pitchers in a full calendar month since at least 2005, and it’s only the sixth time the team has had an ERA under 4 in the last 17 years.
The Bees begin a six-game series with the Tacoma Rainiers on Tuesday night, with Diaz making his next start at Smith’s Ballpark on Thursday night.
Smith’s Family Night will be held on Tuesday, Las Abejas de Salt Lake will be held on Thursday, Teacher Appreciation Night will be held on Saturday, and Mother’s Day Brunch will be held on Sunday.
